What Do You Want From Life? *

Well, it was a pretty relaxed week. I made a little bit of progress towards finding some externship options, baked a lot, got the herbs for the planter box (just this morning!), and had breakfast out twice and lunch out once. And read a bunch of books and magazines — right now I'm in the middle of Norman Mailer's new book which is a fictionalized biography of Adolph Hitler, from the point of view of the devil who has been assigned to his "case."

The week wasn't all pleasant, however. I was really sad that Gina was sent home, and then Uchenna and Joyce got stuck in Frankfurt!! That happened to me and Megan. I wonder if they stayed at the same sterile airport hotel full of disgruntled passengers who missed their connections...

I reviewed the syllabus for this next class, Software Applications. I was perturbed to learn that by the conclusion of the course, I'll be able to "understand and use the MS Windows operating system, understand basic word-processing and desktop publishing using Word, and understand basic spreadsheet creation and analysis using Excel." And there's no coffee allowed in the computer lab. Could be grim.

* Correct answer: "a baby's arm holding an apple"

C'mon: a whole class full of chefs-to-be hacking their way through basic PC applications? And you, a veteran user, can sit back and let the hijinks unfold in front of you. Sounds to me like a veritable cornucopia of whimsy to pull stories from.

well, tim, YES, it would be FUNNY. BUT it's not about FOOD.

I'm curious -- what herbs do you consider to be essential to have on hand? I grow some, out of principle I guess, but since I'm still learning to cook I mostly just peer at them occasionally, in order to verify that they are happy and unharmed in their planter...and then I go about other business. I "get" rosemary and I can figure out what to do with basil too. But what do you do with thyme? And what about sage?

And...though this isn't about food, I have to add that I was also saddened by Gina's departure. How long are Haley's legs going to keep her in the competition? And, well, there's just no point in saying anything about Sanjaya...

I don't mean to drag this on, Madeline, but isn't it all about food, whether directly or indirectly? If Cooklady is writing about her experience at cooking school, isn't all of her coursework just as newsworthy? We've all had classes that haven't been stimulating or within the focus of our areas of interest, but they've all added up to the common knowledge that we grow from.

And it's not like Cooklady's going to stop cooking just because her curriculum's changed. I look forward to the culinary inventions cooked up in her own kitchen.

Alexa: I like growing parsley and chives, because I usually need about a tablespoon at a time for garnish, and a whole bunch (from the store) is way more than that. Thyme is great with mushrooms or chicken or eggs. Sage is really common in stuffing. Both thyme and sage have beautiful fragrances -- you can toss a few branches on your barbecue coals, or use them aromatherapeutically.

[And you others: behave.]

what about basil? i remember getting a giant pile of it from steve and sandra, and man was it awesome to have enough to make a big pile of fresh pesto.

in other news: computers are food.
